KNIGHTS
OF COLUMBUS ELECT STATE OFFICERS
AT ANNUAL CONVENTION
By Mark Bourgoin, State Publicity Director
The Knights of Columbus of Maine held their 113th annual State Convention at the Samoset Resort in Rockport during the weekend of April 18-20, 2008. Approximately 350 people were in attendance at the resort that included the Supreme Office representative, State Officers and their immediate staff, District Deputies, Grand Knights, Convention delegates and their families.
Travel to the event was probably one of the best in the past decade. Temperatures stayed in the mid-70's throughout the weekend and would drop to a very comfortable 55 degrees at night. For those traveling from Aroostook County, it was a very welcome change in climate.
The State Convention is a time where many people have an opportunity to enjoy the laurels of their work for the past year. It is a time when we can get together to reminisce the special events that have occurred involving our Church, our Community, our Council, our Family, and our Youth. It is also an opportunity to see the future of the Knights of Columbus in the State of Maine.
On Saturday afternoon, the Knights and their families attended a Necrology Mass, presided by Richard D. Malone, Th.D., Roman Catholic Bishop of Portland. During the Mass, the list of our deceased brother Knights that past away during the year were read by Council Name. Following that, the new State Officers for the 2008-2009 Fraternal Year were installed. Bishop Malone blessed the officer jewels and then installed Very Reverend Philip Tracy, as State Chaplain. Father Tracy then installed the rest of the State Officers. The Officer's wives were given the opportunity to place the specific "Jewel of Office" around the neck. Those installed are as follows:
State
Deputy: Gerald J. Martin, Madawaska
State Secretary: Raymond A. Sargent, Sanford
State Treasurer: Philip A. Lizotte, Wells
State Advocate: David J. Roy, Standish
State Warden: Norman A. Gray, Auburn
Immediate Past State Deputy: Robert D. King, Sr., Whitefield
Following Mass, a social hour was given in preparation of the Banquet Dinner.
Prior to the meal, each of the past State Deputy's and their wives were escorted
into the dining room, followed by the current State Officers and their wives,
followed by the Supreme Director Logan T. Ludwig, and then Bishop Malone.
A special dedication to the American Flag was presented as well. Following
the meal, the two recipients of the Council Chaplain of the Year were presented.
After the banquet, music and dance was available to all to complete the evening.
On Sunday
morning, the final event of the weekend was the Awards Breakfast Banquet.
Council representatives were given the opportunity to be recognized for their
efforts. This included generalized programs such as the Pro-Life efforts,
Program for People with Disabilities Drives, Blood Drives, Surge Program Projects,
and the Family of the Year Award. Following this, the State, Supreme, Most
Outstanding Council, and the Ron Cote Awards were presented.
After the Awards Breakfast was completed, the attendees were heading home.
For some this could have taken the rest of the day, but the day was beautiful
and the sun was shining. The weekend could not have been better. Vivat Jesu!
